The Art of Dye Molecule Diffusion
The science behind the permanent hair coloring process involves nano-technology as single dye molecules are altered and manipulated. In its raw form this science is above the comprehension of most hair colorist but the basic principles are easy to understand.
The concept behind the permanent hair coloring process is to create a pathway to the inside of the hair shaft, remove melanin or old dyes, place new dye molecules in their place and close the pathway thus locking the new dye molecules in place.
Opening the cuticle is the most common pathway used to access the cortex and once the cortex is stripped of matter it represents a dried sponge with a series of holes of different sizes. Basic physics plays a vital role here whereas the entire permanent hair coloring process is dependent on precise sizing. Dye molecules must be capable of physically passing through the cuticle openings so they can reach and fill the smallest voids created within the cortex.
All hair dye molecules behave differently and each is of a different physical size. Some dye molecules such as oxidation dye molecules grow in physical size once introduced to oxygen so they need to be handled differently.

We take complete control over the dye diffusion process by first segmenting our dye molecules into groups based on physical size. Second we transport these dye molecules through a chemical screen to insure the smallest molecules pass through the cuticle first followed by the larger dye molecules. We know that the color wheel supports basic color theory. Most hair color tones are a certain combination of the three primary colors Red, Blue and Yellow thus making them Tertiary colors. Hair dyes are not the same as visual light because they contain solid particles that can’t duplicate the purity of a primary color so each part of a hair dye formula is often a tertiary color and as many as four can exist in a single hair color formula.
The solid particles in a hair dye formula are dye molecules and there are many types such as basic, direct and oxidation. Each of these dye molecules are different in physical size and behavior. Based on the above theory the final tone that a hair color formula creates is dependent on blending and transporting multiple dye molecules parts.
The secret behind getting that perfect hair color tone begins by creating a formulation of multiple dye molecule sizes and types, transporting them in a precise manner and depositing them within the cortex of the hair shaft successfully. Since each dye molecule represents a part of the final color tone it is critical that each dye molecule is treated special because if it does not enter the cortex correctly the color tone will not be accurate.
